About Chrissie

My main drives to be in photography are curiosity and a general interest in people. The camera gives me wonderful opportunities to have a peek into people’s lives and to learn about different ways of living. I mostly shoot social documentaries, photojournalism and photo essays. I stay on the subject for as long as it takes me to capture the essence of it. Within this discipline, until the turn of the century I preferred working in black and white, with available light, a 24 mm lens and mainly the good old Tri-X film. The Nikon F3 always did the job for me. I have eventually overcome my digifears and have entered into digital photography. I use a Nikon D-100 and often wonder what took me so long to buy one!!! I think I need to upgrade to a D-700 one of these days.

I am a 1996 graduate of the “Foto Academie Amsterdam”, and a 1988 graduate of the “Fotovakschool”. My teacher was Dutch Photojournalist of the Year  2006 and 2008 Joost van den Broek.

In 2004 I finished my first video documentary "Wicksie's Whips" and as I
enjoyed it so much,I plan on doing more of those in the future. Based in The Netherlands, I do travel around quite a bit. I have lived in Indonesia, the USA and Australia and have travelled intensively through these countries as well as through New Zealand, South America, Africa and of course Europe. Needless to say a lot of my work is done abroad.

My assignments come from magazines, newspapers, commercial businesses and non-profit organizations.
